President Biden and former President Donald Trump won commanding victories across nearly all the states holding Democratic and Republican nominating contests on Super Tuesday , according to CBS News projections, solidifying the likelihood of a general election rematch between the two in November.

Both notched wins in delegate-rich states like California, Texas, Virginia and North Carolina, the largest prizes out of the 16 states and one U.S. territory reporting results on Super Tuesday. Exit polls showed Trump leading former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley among broad segments of the GOP electorate, with voters saying immigration and the economy were their most important issues.

Haley denied Trump a clean sweep of the Super Tuesday contests with a victory in Vermont's Republican primary, just her second win of the primary season.

Trump has accumulated more than 1,050 delegates so far and could clinch a delegate majority next week.

Super Tuesday states award more than a third of the delegates available across the entire nomination process, giving them outsized influence in shaping the state of the race. The heavy concentration of primary contests dates back to 1988, and no Republican since then has won the presidential nomination without winning a majority of states on Super Tuesday.

Trump celebrated the election results in remarks at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, telling a group of supporters that "they call it Super Tuesday for a reason." Mr. Biden did not speak publicly, but said in a statement that his likely general election opponent is "determined to destroy our democracy" and "driven by grievance and grift, focused on his own revenge and retribution, not the American people."

Trump victorious in Utah Republican caucuses

Former President Donald Trump added a Super Tuesday win to his list by coming out on top in the Utah GOP caucuses, CBS News projects.

    Trump wins Alaska GOP caucuses

Former President Donald Trump notched another Super Tuesday victory in the Alaska Republican caucuses, CBS News projects.

Late Republican and Democratic delegate estimates after Super Tuesday

As of midnight EST, CBS News projections showed Trump with a substantial lead over Haley in the GOP delegate race. While Trump couldn't statistically secure a majority of GOP delegates in Tuesday's contests, he was inching closer to the magic number of 1,215:

The delegate picture on the Democratic side is even more lopsided. No candidate besides Mr. Biden has secured any delegates. There are two "uncommitted" delegates, based on the results of a protest campaign in Michigan. Tuesday's results also showed "uncommitted" surpassing the threshold needed to secure delegates in Minnesota, but the state party said results likely wouldn't be finalized Tuesday night.

Haley campaign cheers Vermont primary win

A spokesperson for Haley's presidential campaign said she is "honored" to have won support from millions of voters from the states that held their GOP contests on Super Tuesday. The spokesperson noted that Haley's win in Vermont makes her the first Republican woman in history to win two presidential primary elections, coming after her victory in the D.C. Republican race.

"Unity is not achieved by simply claiming 'we're united,'" the spokesperson said. "Today, in state after state, there remains a large block of Republican primary voters who are expressing deep concerns about Donald Trump. That is not the unity our party needs for success. Addressing those voters' concerns will make the Republican Party and America better."

Schiff and Garvey advance in California Senate primary

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican Steve Garvey will advance in California's Senate primary , CBS News projects.

As the top two vote-getters in the state's "jungle" primary, Schiff and Garvey will face-off in the November general election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Feinstein died in September .

Schiff, considered the front-runner throughout the race, was one of several Democrats vying for the Senate seat, and he defeated fellow Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee. Garvey is a former professional baseball star who jumped into the Senate race in October.

Haley wins Vermont primary, landing her first Super Tuesday victory

Nikki Haley, Trump's only Republican competitor, secured her first win of Super Tuesday in Vermont, where CBS News projects she will defeat the former president in the Republican primary.

Vermont has 17 GOP delegates at stake. If Haley wins at least 50% of the statewide vote, she'll be awarded all of the delegates. Otherwise, they are allotted proportionally.

The state's open primary gave Haley a good shot at a win. While Trump won the Vermont GOP primary in 2016, former Ohio Gov. John Kasich was close behind him.

Haley's victory in Vermont is her second of the 2024 campaign — she won the District of Columbia's GOP contest . The result of the race in the nation's capital made history, with Haley becoming the first woman to win a Republican primary.

Rep. Colin Allred will win the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Texas, CBS News projects. He will face GOP Sen. Ted Cruz in November. If Allred defeats Cruz, he would become the first Black senator from Texas.

Cruz has served in the Senate since 2013. Allred, who currently represents Texas' 32nd Congressional District, was elected in 2018. His district covers cities outside of Dallas.

Trump and Biden net wins in California, the largest prize of the night

Trump and Mr. Biden each landed another win in California, CBS News projects.

California, where polls closed at 8 p.m. local time, has the highest number of delegates of any state: 169 delegates in the GOP contest and 424 on the Democratic side.

Trump will win all of the state's Republican delegates if he gets more than 50% of the final vote.

Trump had the endorsement of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and maintains popularity in northern California and Central Valley — red sanctuaries in a blue state.

Trump spoke to a crowd of supporters gathered at Mar-a-Lago, touting his dominant performance on Super Tuesday and calling it "an amazing night."

"They call it Super Tuesday for a reason," he said, before launching a stream of criticism against the U.S. under Mr. Biden's leadership.

By the time he took the stage, Trump had won a majority of states voting on Super Tuesday. Results in three states in the West — Alaska, California and Utah — remained outstanding.

"This has been a day we've been waiting for," Trump said, adding that a likely rematch between him and Mr. Biden on Nov. 5 "is going to go down as the single most important day in the history of our country."

Meanwhile, Haley had pulled ahead of Trump in Vermont. CBS News has now characterized that race as "lean Haley." Trump didn't mention Haley in his remarks.

Biden wins Utah Democratic primary, while Trump takes Massachusetts GOP primary

Mr. Biden has won Utah's Democratic presidential primary, CBS News projects, while Trump is the winner of the Massachusetts GOP primary contest. Republicans in Utah are holding caucuses, which began at 7 p.m. local time.

There are 30 Democratic delegates at stake in Utah.

In Massachusetts, there are 40 GOP delegates up for grabs.

Biden on Super Tuesday results: Trump is "determined to destroy our democracy"

As results continued to trickle in Tuesday night, Mr. Biden said they "leave the American people with a clear choice."

"Are we going to keep moving forward or will we allow Donald Trump to drag us backwards into the chaos, division, and darkness that defined his term in office?" he said in a statement after he and Trump were projected to win a majority of the Super Tuesday states. (Polls are still open in some Western states.)

Mr. Biden, who is at the White House and not delivering public remarks, said in his statement that his likely general election opponent is "determined to destroy our democracy" and "driven by grievance and grift, focused on his own revenge and retribution, not the American people."

"My message to the country is this: Every generation of Americans will face a moment when it has to defend democracy. Stand up for our personal freedom. Stand up for the right to vote and our civil rights. To every Democrat, Republican, and independent who believes in a free and fair America: This is our moment. This is our fight. Together, we will win," he said.

In Minnesota, Biden wins Democratic primary and Trump wins GOP race

CBS News projects that in the Minnesota presidential primaries, Mr. Biden wins the Democratic contest and Trump wins the Republican election.

There are 39 GOP delegates at stake and 75 Democratic delegates.

Mr. Biden's win in Minnesota came amid an effort by some groups in the state to push Democratic voters to check the box for "uncommitted" to ramp up the pressure on the president to call for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza. Mr. Biden has faced criticism from some Arab-Americans for his stance on the war between Israel and Hamas.

A similar effort was mounted in Michigan last week, where more than 101,000 people, or 13% of the total ballots cast, voted "uncommitted" in the state's Democratic primary.

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson will win the Republican primary for governor, CBS News projects.

Robinson earned the backing of former President Donald Trump over the weekend, who called him "Martin Luther King on steroids." On Tuesday, Robinson was projected to defeat attorney Bill Graham and State Treasurer Dale Folwell in the GOP primary.

Robinson, 55, has served as North Carolina's lieutenant governor since 2021. He gained notoriety in Republican circles after he delivered a pro-gun rights speech that went viral online, which helped propel him to being elected lieutenant governor. The lieutenant governor has also received attention in recent years for inflammatory comments about LGBTQ+ issues , among other things. If elected, he would become the first Black governor of North Carolina.

Colorado primary voters go for Trump and Biden

Colorado became the latest state where Trump wins the GOP primary and Mr. Biden is victorious in the Democratic primary, according to CBS News projections. Colorado has 37 GOP delegates and 72 Democratic delegates.

Colorado was at the center of the recent Supreme Court case over Trump's eligibility for the presidency. The justices ruled on Monday that the state could not remove him from the ballot using an obscure provision of the 14th Amendment, overruling a state court decision that found he is ineligible for the White House because of his actions surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Trump and Biden win respective party primaries in Alabama

Trump and Mr. Biden notched wins in Alabama's Republican and Democratic presidential primaries, respectively, CBS News projects.

For the GOP, there are 50 delegates up for grabs. For Democrats, there are 52.
