Betrayal of Trust: Former DC Treasurer Misuses $19K

    2024-03-06

The trust and responsibility bestowed upon individuals in positions of financial management, especially within nonprofit organizations, are critical pillars of accountability and integrity. However, a recent incident involving the former treasurer of a D.C. elementary school PTA, Robynn Chandler-Mitchell, has raised serious concerns. Accused of misappropriating nearly $19,000 from the organization's funds, Chandler-Mitchell now faces legal action initiated by the D.C. attorney general. Let's delve into the details of this unsettling case.

According to investigators, Chandler-Mitchell purportedly treated the nonprofit's bank account as her personal piggy bank, diverting funds meant for children's welfare to fulfill her own desires. The lawsuit filed by the attorney general alleges that she systematically drained the account, admitting under oath to her actions.

The lawsuit highlights a disturbing pattern of financial misuse spanning from July 2021 to September 2022. Chandler-Mitchell stands accused of various expenditures, including cash transfers to herself and a friend, car payments, indulgent services at nail salons, and even lavish restaurant meals in Cancun. The extent of her alleged misconduct becomes even more egregious with details revealing hefty cash withdrawals and extravagant spending on groceries, dining, and spa treatments.

Adam Gitlin, chief of the Antitrust & Nonprofit Enforcement Section of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), emphasizes the necessity of ensuring Chandler-Mitchell's inability to repeat such actions. The lawsuit seeks not only the recovery of the misappropriated funds but also holds her accountable for her actions. Despite attempts to reach Chandler-Mitchell for comment, she remains elusive, with a woman at her listed address declining to engage with reporters.

In response to the allegations, the Powell Padres parent-teacher association expressed gratitude towards the efforts of the Office of the Attorney General in recovering the embezzled funds. They affirmed their commitment to cooperation throughout the legal proceedings. Gitlin reaffirmed the objective of the lawsuit - to reclaim the stolen money and hold Chandler-Mitchell accountable for her breach of trust.

The reprehensible actions of individuals entrusted with financial stewardship tarnish the reputation of nonprofit organizations and undermine the trust of the community they serve. As Chandler-Mitchell faces legal repercussions, this case serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of transparency, oversight, and accountability in safeguarding the integrity of nonprofit institutions. The swift and decisive action taken by authorities underscores the commitment to uphold justice and restore faith in the stewardship of charitable funds.
