    DISTRICT 2-4 CLASS 3A SWIMMINGCasper, Williams, Horutz win individual gold medals

    Abington Heights won five of 12 events in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional Swimming and Diving Championships where it finished third overall in the boys point standings.

    Jason Casper won two individual swimming events while fellow sophomore Derek Williams won one March 1-2 at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.

    Ethan Horutz won the diving, which was conducted Feb. 24 at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre.

    Williams and Casper joined Judah Donnelly, another sophomore, and Jackson Wentz for a win in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.

    Casper won the 200 freestyle by 3.41 seconds in 1:47.61 and the 100 butterfly in 53.05.

    Williams won the 50 freestyle in 22.07 and was second in the 100.

    Ethan Horutz led a 1-2-3 finish by the Comets with an 11-dive score of 520.00. Ryan Horutz was second out of five entries and Micah White was third.

    Casper, Williams, Wentz and Geoff Brock finished second in the 200 freestyle relay.

    The Comets were also fifth in the 200 medley relay with the team of Donnelly, Brock, Orion Grose and Preston Baker.

    The top six in each event earned medals and the top 12 scored points for their team.

    Brock was sixth and Alec Allspaugh 11 th in the 100 breaststroke.

    Donnelly was seventh in the 500 freestyle and was one of three in the top 12 in the 200 freestyle. Brock was ninth, Donnelly 11 th and Wentz 12 th .

    Williamsport, District 4’s lone Class 3A team, won the title with 287 points.

    Delaware Valley had 281 while Abington Heights was second-best among the eight District 2 teams with 212.

    The Comets went 7-1 in the Lackawanna League season to finish second behind unbeaten Delaware Valley.

    GIRLS

    Veronica Matthies placed second in diving and sophomore Gianna Vachino was second in the 200 freestyle for Abington Heights during the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional.

    The Comets were fourth out of 11 teams.

    Williamsport won the title with 344 points, followed by Tunkhannock with 219, Delaware Valley 210½ and Abington Heights 125.

    Abington Heights finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the three relays. It was fifth in the 200 freestyle, sixth in the 200 medley and seventh in the 400 freestyle.

    Ella Bannon, Audra Wimer, Vacchino and Mirey Hirtz were on the fifth- and sixth-place teams.

    Sunny Lynch, Catalina Matthies, Kaitlynn Clark and Anna Flowers made up the seventh-place team.

    Winner was sixth in the 100 backstroke and ninth in the 100 freestyle.

    Sunny Lynch was ninth in the 200 individual medley and Sydney Moyle was 12 th .

    Bannon was ninth and Kailey Rillsonte 10 th in the 100 breaststroke.

    Anna Flowers was 10 th in the 50 freestyle and 10 th in the 100 freestyle.

    Kaitlynn Clark was 12 th in the 500 freestyle.
