We tried listening to the speeches – there were so many.

We tried looking past the drama – there’s been so much.

But the words we’re hearing now are the same words we already listened to when we didn’t want what was about to happen. And it’s happening all over again.

We’re having a national Déjà vu moment and it feels like it’s 1972.

Not to pick on 1972, it wasn’t such a bad year. Nixon was elected president by a landslide. Of course, he was gone 18 months later, and that did dampen the national joy a bit.

We were told things by him that weren’t true. No big surprise there, he worked in Washington after all.

The Pentagon Papers had arrived and told us things about the government that no one wanted to hear but in the end were glad they did.

The old president resigned and was pardoned by the new one. He built a library, wrote a book or two, and went on tour.

He was adept at telling the world who he was and what he did even when reality differed just a bit. We all like a good story.

Trump tells a good story too. A bit rambling at times and long on achievements, short on facts but he’s entertaining. And lord knows we need more entertainment than we did in the past.

The Super Bowl only comes once a year.

The good news though is that baseball is about to start. Springtime and the smell of grass and beer.

March Madness is just around the corner.

And Taylor Swift is still on tour.

Nikki Haley has left the building. She suspended her campaign. It seems speaking in complete sentences isn’t as prized as it once was. But we’re used to abbreviations. OMG. LOL. WTF.

They help fill in the gaps when logic and truth are in short supply. We’re also used to Apps guiding us, telling us where to go and what to say.

They track our heart rate, the number of steps taken, the times we went up and down the stairs, and where the nearest Dunkin Donuts is located just in case, we need a pick-me-up.

The Supreme Court ruled that states couldn’t remove Trump's name from the ballots. That was a good thing. Again, we need the entertainment and he will provide plenty over the coming months.

There are some hurdles though. The indictments. The trials. The millions in bonds he needs to put up. Along with the pressing question – will America vote for a man convicted and going to jail?

But these are strange times. And they require unusual solutions.

Biden’s approval numbers are low, while the economy has been up for 3 ½ years. The best in a decade or more. And Trump’s numbers, well, they don’t seem to matter as we like his explanations better.

The GOP says immigration is the #1 issue in America, but they don’t want it solved - not yet. It gets too much good press when things are bad; that is, bad press is good because it gives everyone on that side of the aisle something to complain about.

And a presidential campaign without things to complain about, or fingers to be pointed is just not entertaining.

The national election is still eight months away. That’s about $10 billion in punishing ads, dozens of amazingly packed rallies, and hundreds of hours of prize-winning reporting on Fox.

Not to mention numerous debates that will make us wish we were all back in kindergarten and so many promises that the entire inventory of promises for the next ten years will be used up.

That’s right, another national shortage leading to higher prices for promises made in years to come.

Then there’s social media, the electoral wildcard that’s giving many of us sleepless nights. All those stories of things happening that aren’t. All those quotes from important people in the know – who never said them.

All those captivating images of people hobnobbing and rubbing elbows and looking all simpatico with the candidates that are totally fake.

And if we weren’t already spending far too much of our precious time figuring out what’s true and what’s not, we thankfully get a little reprieve because we’ll be hearing all about the same claims, the same facts, and accomplishments that we heard in 2016 and 2020 and now don’t have to think about them all over again.

Giving all of us more time for basketball, spring training, the Stanley Cup, the NFL Draft, the World Series, and a chance to bet on all of them, increasing our chances of having just a little bit of fun before November rolls around again.

And about those turnips. The prices are relatively stable for those who like them on their dinner plates. Some more good news for all of us.
