U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, R-Oregon, is throwing her support behind Donald Trump now that he’s the likely Republican nominee for president.

Chavez-DeRemer made her endorsement announcement in a short thread on X , formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday morning, March 6, shortly after former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley suspended her campaign. Chavez-DeRemer hadn’t previously endorsed anyone in the race.

“Donald Trump clearly outlined how Joe Biden’s policies have been a disaster for our country, and that we desperately need a president who will secure the border, strengthen the economy and improve public safety,” Chavez-DeRemer wrote. “I will be supporting him for president, so the American people know their voices were heard and get the relief they deserve from Joe Biden’s failures.”

Oregon’s other Republican in Congress, Rep. Cliff Bentz from eastern Oregon, endorsed Trump in January. At the time, Chavez-DeRemer said she looked forward to seeing the electoral process play out.

Footage shared with the Capital Chronicle — a news partner of the Pamplin Media Group — of Chavez-DeRemer in D.C. on Tuesday night also showed her declining to answer a question about when she would endorse Trump. The former president cleaned up in more than a dozen states that held their nominating contests on Super Tuesday, March 5, and is more than three-quarters of the way to securing the delegates he needs for the Republican nomination.

Chavez-DeRemer represents a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans, and her Democratic opponents are keen to tie her to Trump. Biden beat Trump by 9 percentage points in the 5th Congressional District, which stretches from suburban Portland to Bend, and includes the all or portions of Aurora, Beavercreek, Bend, Canby, Gladstone, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Molalla, Oregon City and West Linn.

Most responses to her endorsement tweets were negative, and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman Dan Gottlieb slammed Chavez-DeRemer in a statement.

“Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s endorsement of Donald Trump confirms what we already knew to be true: when push comes to shove, Chavez-DeRemer will always cave to the most dangerous, far-right MAGA influences,” Gottlieb said. “This much is clear: Lori Chavez-DeRemer is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the country for good reason. With each passing day, she gives Oregonians more and more motive to vote her out this November.”
