Though pop icon Madonna has brought many guests on stage for her Celebration Tour , no one was expecting a full collaboration, let alone with another Pop star. In a surprise moment during her L.A. opening show, Madonna brought on Australian-born pop princess Kylie Minogue . “I would like to introduce a very special guest who is going to come up here and sing with me,” Madonna began. “Her name is Kylie Minogue.” With that, Kylie took the stage and the crowd erupted in applause and cheers. The two chuckled, hugged, and practically stared at each other in excitement. “Here we are!”

The two have long been connected to one another indirectly, from messages of support to brief conversations at award shows. Madonna even wore a bedazzled shirt with Minogue’s name on it at her 2000 MTV EMAs performance to publicly show her support. Minogue obviously took note of the homage, as she gave Madonna the same bedazzled-t shirt reference during Thursday's show. Thus, The two have always wished to collaborate, but nothing came to fruition -- until now. “Why did it take so long?” asked Madonna at the concert. “You live far away. Australia is far.”

In addition to singing an acapella version of Kylie’s smash hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” the singers also took on a slowed version of Gloria Gaynor ’s “I Will Survive.” The song is clearly relevant to the Celebration Tour , which highlights Madonna’s decades-long career and her ability to power through its most difficult moments. Yet, the survival anthem could also be a nod to both her and Minogue’s serious health scares. Minogue is a breast cancer survivor, having been diagnosed in 2005, and Madonna has openly discussed the life-threatening bacterial infection she had just last year. “This summer I had a surprise,” she said during the concert, “It’s called a near-death experience.” And yes, both have survived!

Regardless of the performance’s deeper meanings, the icons were clearly having fun just being together. Fan-filmed videos show the duo laughing while singing, chatting, and dancing. Minogue took to Instagram to keep that good feeling alive, writing, “MADONNA. It’s been a long time coming!!! LOVED being with you!!!! Celebration Tour AND it is now International Women’s Day …. THANK YOU and LOVE LOVE LOVE.”

Let’s hope we see more collaborations in their future because fans will be ‘Hung Up’ on this for a while! Tune in to The 80s , Madonna Radio , and more -- available 24/7 on the free Audacy app.
