Brooklyn Center boys basketball concluded its regular season last week with a loss on March 7 at Jordan. The result marked the end of an exciting run, which included two straight victories.

The Centaurs finished bottom of the Tri-Metro Conference, taking one win in conference play and two overall in the regular season.

The Centaurs closed out the regular season with a home game against Metro Schools College Prep on March 2. Brooklyn Center defeated the visitors 83-75 to kick off March with high spirits and plenty of points.

Brooklyn Center was then given the 16th seed in the Section 5AA tournament last week. They say sections mark a restart for teams, a message Brooklyn Center took to heart.

Brooklyn Center was drawn against ninth-seeded Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers. With a seven-seed differential, Brooklyn Center pulled off a stunning 79-72 victory.

The win did not come easily. Brooklyn Center led 37-31 at halftime and proceeded to a more serious lead, eventually standing 20 points ahead, 72-52, with five minutes to go.

The Lakers made a surging comeback, closing the gap to just a few points.

Brooklyn Center held on to earn its first section tournament victory since the 2017-18 season when the Centaurs qualified for state and finished fourth.

The Centaurs’ win over the Lakers pitted them against eighth-seed Jordan two days later, which turned into an eventual 83-65 loss for Brooklyn Center.

Brooklyn Center started the night strong, leading for most of the first 10 minutes of the first half with good physical play and a few striking three-pointers. Jordan did rise to the occasion with time, taking its first lead of the night in the last few minutes of the half. Jordan held a 36-30 lead at the break.

Jordan built on its lead in the second half, managing to stay ahead of Brooklyn Center’s continued offensive efforts to eventually build a strong lead. Brooklyn Center eventually lost 83-65, having kept Jordan on their toes, despite the hosts ranking considerably higher than the Centaurs in seeding.

Alan Moore led Brooklyn Center on points with 18 against Jordan, while Steven Nzimi added 16, Avell Ross-Washington put up 12, and Elijah Campbell added 11.

Brooklyn Center featured a large senior class this season, including Abriel Foster, Demari Neal, Deshaun Pongsak, Touger Lor, Sean Johnson, Campbell, Nzimi, Jesus Anzaldo, Jordan Exom, Trevant Meeks and Yakhouba Toure.
