First-seed Breck boys basketball played one section tournament game last week to start its post-season run, beating eighth-seed Jordan 97-61 on March 9 at home in the Section 5AA quarterfinals.

Two factors became clear early in the game. One was that Jordan, 11-15 prior to that day, had arrived ready to battle until the end, but Breck was going to be more than the visitors could handle.

Breck picked up points from the outset with runs of quality from Daniel Freitag, Hanif Muhammad, Miles Newton and JP Musoke. Jordan was outpaced quickly and the Mustangs led 29-11 by the time a timeout marked the passage of the first 10 minutes of play. The next eight minutes were not any different and Breck eventually blew ahead to lead 62-31 at halftime.

Breck’s much-discussed offensive performances this season were reflected in Saturday’s win as the Mustangs piled on points. Freitag had 14 points at the break, while Muhammad had 13 and Newton had 11.

The quality continued to show through for Breck in the second half, with the Mustangs making sure there was no looking back on its dominant lead. Jordan did do their best to stay in the game and did work hard to eventually pass the 60-point mark in the game, before losing 97-61.

As Breck’s victory became clear, the Mustangs gave important varsity minutes to several players. These included sophomore Mu Muhammad, junior Teddy Koch, junior Carter Steinbeck, freshman Ayden Green, junior Ezra Satran, junior James Russ and sophomore Barrett Shaul.

Freitag led Breck on points with 28 against Jordan. Muhammad and Newton added 21 each. Ten Mustangs scored in the game. Jordan’s Mitchell Schmidt was also amongst the top scorers with 25 points.

Breck boys basketball will return to the court on March 13, facing rivals Blake in the section semifinals, hosted at St. Michael-Albertville.
