Orlando, FL. - In the early hours of March 12, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded on the I-4 westbound exit ramp to Sand Lake Road, resulting in one fatality and leaving another person injured. At approximately 5:34 a.m., a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper, who was stationed at the intersection for a construction detail, witnessed a harrowing event as a 2016 Nissan Sentra, made a perilous turn, entering the exit ramp in the wrong direction.

The trooper, in a swift attempt to avert disaster, activated lights and sirens and followed the Nissan Sentra in an effort to stop the driver from continuing further down the ramp in the wrong direction. Despite these efforts, the situation escalated as the Nissan Sentra, failing to heed the trooper's warning, collided head-on with a 2011 Jeep Wrangler, which was traveling westbound on the exit ramp towards Sand Lake Road.

The impact of the collision was severe, causing both the Nissan Sentra and the Jeep Wrangler to strike the outside shoulder guardrail. The driver of the Nissan Sentra was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a somber moment for all involved. The individual behind the wheel of the Jeep Wrangler was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with injuries deemed non-life-threatening, according to emergency response teams.

The aftermath of the collision has led to significant roadblocks on the I-4 westbound exit ramp to Sand Lake Road, causing disruptions and delays as authorities work to clear the scene. The FHP has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, seeking to understand the factors that led to the fatal wrong-way collision.

The only way you get on the wrong way on that exit is to be drunk.
