(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Cell phones and other wireless communication devices will be prohibited in Indiana classrooms, under a measure signed this week by Gov. Eric J. Holcomb.

Effective in July, the ban will bar the use of phones, tablets, laptops and gaming devices during instructional time, although individual school systems will be responsible for setting up their own policies to achieve this aim.

And there are several exceptions outlined in Senate Enrolled Act 185 , including the possible use of communication devices for “educational purposes”; for medical purposes and in case of an emergency.

Proponents of the measure say it’s meant to keep students focused during school hours.
