In a shocking incident that has left a family reeling and raised concerns about safety in Portland, 73-year-old Xinmin Liang was violently assaulted while fishing on the Willamette River near Downtown Portland. According to Liang's family, the assailant approached him without warning, wielding a large stick, and began to viciously beat him near the Steel Bridge. The harrowing ordeal was compounded by the lack of immediate assistance. Liang, who does not speak English, was unable to call emergency services himself and instead reached out to his wife before taking public transit to seek help. Shockingly, during his journey on the MAX train, bystanders reportedly observed his injuries but did not intervene or offer aid.

Described as a white man wearing a gray shirt and pants, the attacker left behind a distinctive blue Willamette Week beanie at the scene of the crime. Despite Liang's family turning over this crucial piece of evidence to the authorities, the perpetrator remains at large, prompting fears of further violence in the community.

The motive behind the assault remains unclear, as the attacker did not communicate with Liang before launching the attack. While the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) is currently treating the incident as an assault rather than a bias crime, the possibility of a hate-motivated attack has not been ruled out, pending further investigation.

Once an avid fisherman, Liang now fears returning to his downtown home and has sought refuge with his daughter's family.
