Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson, a Former Bartow State Senator, Battling Stage 4 Pancreatic Canter

Cartersville’s Bruce Thompson, who left his state Senate seat to win election as Georgia’s Labor Commissioner in November 2022, is battling state four pancreatic cancer that has spread to his liver.

In a statement posted Friday morning, Thompson shared the following:

“On Tuesday, I was suddenly diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which has spread to my liver. I will provide updates with accurate information once available. While we wait on a final prognosis for chemotherapy, I can assure you I will continue to be who I have always been — a fighter.

“To be clear, I will continue to fulfill my duties as Labor Commissioner throughout this time and will work with my highly professional and qualified staff to ensure Georgia citizens are served with uninterrupted excellence.

“I ask that you cover me, my family, and the DOL staff in prayer as we prepare to boldly take on this next battle.”

A Bartow business leader, Thompson was first elected to the Georgia Senate in 2012 in a district that includes Bartow and Cherokee counties and parts of Cobb County.

He served as chairman of the Senate’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee and formerly chaired the Science and Technology Committee and the Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee.
