Surry-Yadkin Works placed 95 students in pre-apprenticeships for the Fall 2023 semester. This is the largest group of pre-apprentices that the program has ever placed.
The program is the collaborative effort of four public school systems in Surry and Yadkin counties including Elkin City Schools, Mount Airy City Schools, Surry County Schools, and Yadkin County Schools, as well as Surry Community College, to create a unique approach to a regional internship program.
The Surry-Yadkin Works pre-apprentices worked in 55 businesses and organizations throughout Surry and Yadkin counties. These students are grouped by school and listed below:

Of these students, 18 were returning for their second semester as a pre-apprentice in the Surry-Yadkin Works program. Five students had returned for their third semester, and one student had returned for their fourth semester.
The students began their Fall 2023 pre-apprentices on Aug. 21, and they worked through Dec. 15.
They received high school and/or college credit for their employment along with a stipend each month for travel expenses. Many of the students’ positions were paid as well.
The students are also registered with ApprenticeshipNC, which is a system put in place to help North Carolina businesses and workers succeed. Pre-apprentices will receive a nationally recognized pre-apprentice completion credential.
