Ohio 9th U.S. Congressional race set: Republican state Rep. Derek Merrin v. incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur

By: Ohio Capital Journal Staff - Tuesday March 19, 2024 9:52 pm

The Associated Press has projected that Republican Ohio state Rep. Derek Merrin has won the nomination in Ohio’s 9th U.S. Congressional district to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur in November.

Merrin was selected by the Ohio House Republican caucus in late 2022 to be the next Ohio House Speaker, but lost the floor vote to fellow Republican Jason Stephens after Stephens cut a deal for Ohio House Democratic votes. That set up a feud between factions of the Republican Party in the Ohio House over the past year.

Kaptur is the longest serving U.S. Congresswoman in American history, first winning election in 1982.
