    New roundabout in Gateway

Drivers along Gateway Boulevard will notice a new traffic pattern when a new roundabout opens on Thursday, March 28.

The roundabout is going in at Gateway Boulevard and Griffin Drive. That’s located at the southern end of the Gateway community.

The year-long $5.8 million Lee County Department of Transportation project to build the roundabout, in coordination with the Gateway Services Community Development District (CDD), is nearly complete.

Motorists can expect traffic pattern changes as work is finalized.

Once done, motorists will have a safe, efficient roundabout around landscaping and a fountain, for which the CDD contributed $865,000.

“The county is always looking at ways we can improve our community’s quality of life,” said Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass, whose district includes Gateway. “When it comes to our roadways, our goal is to provide safe and efficient travel and this project accomplishes not only that, but also incorporates beautification enhancements for all to enjoy.”

Roundabouts provide many operational benefits when compared to traditional intersections. These include fewer delays, less expense to maintain, sufficient capacity to accommodate fluctuating traffic, longer life span and fewer, less severe crashes.

Roundabouts reduce travel time by allowing traffic in all directions to flow continuously. Motorists travel in a counterclockwise direction around the circle and proceed in their intended direction without stopping. Studies show a significant time savings because motorists do not have to wait to make left-turns.
