Community members participate in March of the Mayors

Bassfield Mayor Angiel Ladner and 14 other mayors across the Pine Belt participated recently in Extra Table’s event, March of the Mayors.

March of the Mayors is a canned food drive described as “Mississippi’s Largest Food Box Packing Party” with the mission to feed hungry Mississippians.

It is a four week long event, driven by donations of specific food items, that will benefit Extra Table’s partner food pantries in the Pine Belt.

Each participating city collected one specific food item with the Bassfield community donating 425 cans of corn to the event.

Bassfield Mayor Angie Ladner and Jefferson Davis County volunteers Jason Wambolt, Dorothy Barnes and Cammie Reese packed boxes on March 7 at Venture Church’s Hunt Club Campus in Hattiesburg.

They brought 144 boxes back to Jefferson Davis County with the pantries at Holly Springs Church and Carson Baptist Church each receiving 72 boxes to be donated back into the community.

“This was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had,” said Ladner.

Other cities participated from the Pine Belt were Collins, Columbia, Ellisville, Hattiesburg, Heidelberg, Laurel, Lumberton, Magee, Petal, Poplarville, Purvis, Sandersville, Sumrall and Wiggins.

A total of 50 mayors in five regions across the state packed boxes over a five day period.
