Biden and Trump notch more wins Tuesday as primary voters urge them to keep up the fight

TEMPE, Arizona (AP) — Joe Biden and Donald Trump are moving closer to a November rematch, as primary voters around the country urge their favored candidate to keep up the fight and worry about what might happen if their side loses this fall. Both candidates are already their parties’ presumptive nominees. Trump easily won Republican primaries in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Ohio. Biden did the same except in Florida, where Democrats had canceled their primary and opted to award all 224 of their delegates to Biden. Both Biden’s and Trump’s campaigns are working to fire up their bases by tearing into each other and warning of the perils of the opponent.

Trump suggests he’d support a national ban on abortions around 15 weeks of pregnancy

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is suggesting he’d support a national ban on abortions around 15 weeks of pregnancy, voicing for the first time support for a specific limit on the procedure. The Republican former president has taken credit for overturning abortion rights in America by appointing three U.S. Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that had established the constitutional protection for abortion. But as Trump seeks the White House again, he has until now refrained from embracing any specific limit on abortion, warning it can backfire politically.

Palestinians mourn 28 killed in Israeli airstrikes on urban refugee camps in Gaza

Mourners were holding funeral prayers Wednesday morning outside a hospital in central Gaza for 28 people killed in three separate Israeli airstrikes on urban refugee camps. Associated Press footage shows mourners praying over the bodies, which were wrapped in funeral shrouds, before being taken away for burial. As fighting rages on in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he’s determined to carry out a Rafah ground offensive, despite U.S. President Joe Biden’s misgivings. Earlier, Qatari officials said they were “cautiously optimistic” after talks with Israel’s intelligence chief in Doha aimed at trying to reach a cease-fire. But, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said Tuesday, an Israeli ground operation in Rafah would set back any talks.

Court puts Texas law allowing police to arrest migrants who cross illegally back on hold

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A federal appeals court has again prevented Texas from arresting and deporting migrants accused of entering the U.S. illegally. The panel from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled hours after the the law briefly took effect Tuesday. A divided U.S. Supreme Court had let the state law take effect while a legal challenge plays out. Before that, some sheriffs were ready to relish an unprecedented state expansion into border enforcement. Others were reluctant. An order hours later by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals put the law on hold again.

Election misinformation is a problem in any language, some gets more attention than others

WASHINGTON (AP) — Election misinformation will pose a formidable challenge this year as billions of people in dozens of countries head to the polls. Social media companies have announced plans to combat misleading content around the world, but they’ve faced criticism that too many of their efforts are focused on English-language content and audiences in the U.S. and the European Union. That leaves millions of voters who speak other languages or who live in other regions with fewer protections and at greater risk of encountering political falsehoods that could swing elections and undermine faith in democracy.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar says he’s quitting for personal and political reasons

LONDON (AP) — Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who made history as his country’s first gay and first biracial leader, says he’ll step down within weeks once a successor is chosen. He says he’s quitting immediately as head of the center-right Fine Gael party, part of Ireland’s coalition government. He’ll be replaced as prime minister after a party leadership contest. He said his reasons were “both personal and political.” Varadkar has been taoiseach, or prime minister, twice — between 2017 and 2020 and again since December 2022. He played a leading role in campaigns to legalize same-sex marriage and to repeal a ban on abortion.

Historic covered bridges are under threat by truck drivers relying on GPS meant for cars

LYNDON, Vt. (AP) — One of Vermont’s historic covered bridges is under threat from modern technology. Box truck drivers relying on GPS designed for cars continually crash through Lyndon’s 140-year-old Miller’s Run bridge. That’s despite signs, including a flashing one, to deter vehicles that are too tall or too heavy from crossing. Drivers can face fines of $5,000 from the town, plus state penalties. But the bridge keeps getting whacked. Lyndon is far from alone. According to head of the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, last November, a tractor trailer truck seriously damaged a covered bridge in Princeton, Illinois, and a bridge in Ohio was damaged in a similar way a year earlier.

Bruce Springsteen returns to the stage in Phoenix after health issues postponed his 2023 world tour

PHOENIX (AP) — Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band returned to the stage at the Footprint Center in Phoenix in a triumphant reboot of the Boss’ postponed 2023 world tour. In September, Springsteen, 74, announced his tour would be delayed until 2024, citing doctor’s advice as he recovered from peptic ulcer disease. In September, Springsteen, 74, announced his tour would be delayed until 2024, citing doctor’s advice as he recovered from peptic ulcer disease. The 29-song show came in just under three hours, but “The Boss” hardly broke a sweat while showing off a strong voice, all the while dancing, ripping into guitar solos, playing the harmonica and even tearing his shirt open near the end of the show.

French bulldogs remain the most popular US breed in new rankings. Many fans aren’t happy

NEW YORK (AP) — The American Kennel Club says French bulldogs are still the United States’ most commonly registered purebreds. The new standings were released Wednesday. Some say they make Frenchies the nation’s most popular canine. But is it a coup to be celebrated? Longtime fans say au contraire. They worry about what popularity is doing to the breed. The rankings are derived from puppies and other dogs that were added to the AKC’s registry last year. The club is the United States’ oldest dog registry. After Frenchies, the most common AKC breeds were Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds and poodles.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s RBI single capped a four-run eighth-inning rally in his Dodgers debut, and Los Angeles beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 in the season opener. The game turned when a routine grounder went through the webbing of first baseman Jake Cronenworth. Ohtani went 2 for 5 in his first game since leaving the Los Angeles Angels for a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers. A crowd of 15,952 was on hand to watch at the Gocheok Sky Dome for Major League Baseball’s first game in South Korea.
