Suspected Squatters Arrested After Woman Found Dead in Manhattan Apartment

    2024-03-22

NEW YORK—In a shocking incident that has rattled the Kips Bay neighborhood, two individuals suspected of squatting have been arrested following the discovery of a woman's body in a duffel bag inside a Manhattan apartment. The victim, identified as 52-year-old Nadia Vitel from Spain, was allegedly killed after she encountered the squatters in her late mother's apartment.

Nadia Vitel, who had come to the United States to prepare her mother's apartment for a family friend, stumbled upon a man and a woman unlawfully residing in the property, which had been vacant for several months following her mother's death. A confrontation ensued, during which Vitel was reportedly thrown against a sheetrock wall, leading to her tragic demise.

The suspects are accused of fleeing the scene in Vitel's Lexus, embarking on a journey that ended with a crash near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Law enforcement officials apprehended the pair on Friday in York, Pennsylvania, where they were taken into custody for questioning in connection with Vitel's death.

The grim discovery of Vitel's body was made on March 14, after her son, who had not heard from his mother for two days, entered the apartment with the assistance of the building's superintendent and other relatives. They found Vitel's remains concealed in a duffel bag in a closet, with her foot protruding from the bag, signaling a violent end.

Authorities have determined that Vitel succumbed to blunt force trauma to the head, and her death has been officially ruled a homicide. The investigation into this heinous crime continues, as the community reels from the brutality of the act and the unsettling reality of the vulnerability of unoccupied residences. The arrest of the suspects brings a measure of relief, but the tragic loss of Nadia Vitel leaves a void that cannot be filled, as her family and friends mourn her untimely passing.
