The Lake Oswego baseball team rose to number one in the latest OSAA 6A rankings after beating Sherwood 1-0 on Thursday evening at Lake Oswego High School.

The Lakers, led by a dominant performance on the mound by junior Elliott Wear, improved to 4-0 on the season with the win, holding the Bowmen scoreless after surrendering two base runners in the opening frame of the game.

Wear finished the game with six strikeouts, while the game’s only run came in the bottom of the third on an effective sacrifice fly deep to center field by senior Sam Trojan. Fellow senior Finley Smith scored on the play, as Lake Oswego picked up a boost in the statewide rankings while beating a team ranked fourth in the preseason 6A coaches poll.

After the win over Sherwood, the Lakers found themselves listed atop the Thursday-night update of the OSAA 6A rankings, ahead of other talented teams like West Linn and Jesuit.

While the spring season just recently began, Lake Oswego’s early ranking is certainly a good sign in relation to its postseason seed. As the early frontrunners, the Lakers are in great shape.

Alongside the win over the Bowmen on Thursday, Lake Oswego holds a 3-1 win on the road over Jesuit, in addition to victories against Roseburg and West Salem.

At 4-0, the Lakers are one of just six unbeaten teams remaining in the 6A classification this spring.
