The Dunkirk Harbor Fishing Platform has officially reopened, much to the delight of local anglers, following its reconstruction after being damaged by a severe storm surge in 2020. NYSDEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the reopening, highlighting the platform's importance in providing access to safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation opportunities.

Situated on the west side of Dunkirk Harbor in Chadwick Harbor, the fishing platform boasts several upgrades, including slip-resistant decking, solar-powered lighting, and seating for anglers. Additionally, parking for eight cars has been provided, enhancing convenience for visitors.

Anglers can anticipate a diverse range of sportfish throughout the year, including smallmouth bass, steelhead, walleye, channel catfish, bullhead, white bass, yellow perch, and brown trout. The spring months are particularly promising, with an abundance of species expected to be available for anglers to target.

The reconstruction project, totaling $156,201 in costs, was made possible through funding from NY Works and collaborative efforts from various NYSDEC units, including the Region 9 Bureau of Fisheries and Division of Operations, the Lake Erie Fisheries Unit, and the Bureau of Design and Construction.

Commissioner Seggos emphasized DEC's commitment to expanding access to outdoor recreation opportunities, emphasizing the importance of connecting New Yorkers and visitors to nature and the outdoors. The Dunkirk Harbor Fishing Platform stands as a testament to this commitment, offering anglers access to the renowned fishing opportunities of Lake Erie.

Looking ahead, local anglers are encouraged to stay updated on fishing conditions through the NYSDEC WNY and Lake Erie Fishing Hotline. In addition, upcoming events such as the Children-In-The-Stream Youth 4H Fly Fishing Program and the opening day of the NYS Inland Trout Fishing season provide exciting opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to engage in recreational activities.

As the Dunkirk Harbor Fishing Platform welcomes anglers once again, it symbolizes not only a place for fishing but also a gateway to the natural beauty and abundance of Lake Erie's waters.
