Washington voters choose Sims as next district attorney

Washington Parish voters on Saturday picked Collin Sims for their new district attorney with a 52 percent majority.

The Republican received 2 , 982 votes.

His opponent, Vincent Wynne — also a Republican — received 2 , 719 votes, or 48 percent.

Sims was appointed first assistant district attorney prior to District Attorney Warren Montgomery’s death and has been serving as interim district attorney for the 22 ^nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office for St. Tammany and Washington parishes.

Also on Saturday, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won Louisiana’s primary, collecting more delegates after they already clinched their party nominations.

Washington voters overwhelmingly chose Trump in the Republican primary and Biden as the Democrat candidate. Trump received 2 , 716 votes, or 95 percent; Biden received 1 , 278 votes, or 76 percent.

Voter turnout in Washington Parish for Saturday’s race was 20 percent.
