Part of the mid-90s sitcom’s success was the on-screen chemistry between characters Kimberly Parker and Moesha. In addition to Neicy, portrayed by Denise Jackson. However, Starr says the picture behind the scenes was different.
The Actor Said The Two Verbally Disagreed
During an interview with the Art of Dialogue , Fredo, who played Quinton “Q” Brooks, stated, “I mean, there was definitely friction…. definitely.” He said, “There was times on the set where they had an argument once or twice. They got over it, you know.”
Countess knew she was a major part of the show’s success and reportedly wasn’t afraid to let it be known.
“People argue but I’m gonna keep it real, Countess Vaughn was funny. She was hilarious, and they needed her on the show, so she had a right to beef,” the lyricist said.
Fredo insinuated there was an incident that set off the actress who played Brandy’s sidekick, adding, “Whatever happened, I’m sure that she was frustrated enough to where it exploded.”
The 52-year-old, who played Mo’s boyfriend on the show, stated Vaughn clearly had the talent to carry her own show.
“Countess was so dope and so much of a great actress and so funny…they gave her her own show,” he shared.
“She did 100 episodes. All she gotta do is check her mailbox,” Star continued.
The New York native stated sometimes disagreements can lead to better opportunities. Fredro stated, “You know, sometimes beefing is good. They was able to get two shows out of it.”
Later in the interview, Fredro seemed to have an epiphany. He surmised the ladies could have pretended like they didn’t get along to lay the groundwork for Kim’s spin-off show.
“They’re actresses, right? They could have been a whole act, and they just milked them,” he stated.
Brandy Spoke On Their Beef
Brandy reportedly publicly discussed their conflict in 1998 in an issue of Vibe Magazine. The Grammy winner said, “I think she’s very funny, very talented. I just feel like she wants to be in the position I’m in.”
The singer added, “People tell her, ‘You’re the reason why the show’s successful.’ And she’s told me that before. And she’s called me a b**** to my face. She said, ‘I’m the reason why the show is successful, b****.’ In front of a lot of people.”
Twenty years later, Vaughn issued an apology via Instagram.
“ I apologize for anything negative I’ve ever done and [sic] said to you… Congratulations on everything you’ve accomplished… Love you beautiful.”
Brandy gladly accepted Countess’ apology, stating, “I would love to start a new friendship with you with new heads on both of our shoulders.”
‘Moesha’ had a successful run for 11 years, from 1995 to 2001.
