Always a master with words, guitarist Pete Townshend recently revealed in a new interview that he believes The Who will likely hit the road for one final farewell tour before they “crawl off to die.”

Looking ahead at any possible plans for the band in the near future, the guitar legend tells The New York Times , “It feels to me like there’s one thing The Who can do, and that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die.”

“I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with The Who,” Townshend continued, claiming that lately he’s been interested in live concerts simply as a way to pay the bills. “If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money,” he admits. “My idea of an ordinary lifestyle is pretty elevated.”

Earlier this year, frontman Roger Daltrey told The Times UK that he had no immediate plans to return to the stage with The Who, claiming he was "happy saying that part of my life is over," while adding he had no studio time booked with Pete Townshend either. That comment naturally led fans to believe the end had come not with a bang but a whimper, however, Daltrey did say he and Pete needed to "sit down and have a meeting" about the group's future. If or when that meeting will happen is anyone's guess.

The Who last performed live on March 18 and 20 at London's Royal Albert Hall along with Squeeze to benefit Teenage Cancer Trust . Before that, their last concert happened in the summer of 2023 at Sandringham House in Sandringham, England, accompanied by a full orchestra.

Currently, the reimagined, revival version of The Who's iconic Tommy is set to open on March 28 at New York City's Nederlander Theater, with Ali Louis Bourzgui making his Broadway debut as the lead.
