    Ogechi and Kenya pursue 2025 AfroBasket tournament

    Park Center alumnus Derrick Ogechi recently featured for the Kenyan men’s national basketball team in three qualifying games for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament.

    Kenya defeated Guinea 80-74 after losing two competitive games to Tunisia and Angola, all hosted in Monastir, Tunisia. Kenya will replay all three teams to complete the group phase of qualifying. The team currently are third in its group, narrowly behind group leader Tunisia and second-place Angola. The top three from each group will qualify for the tournament.

    The AfroBasket tournament is hosted every four years and is contested by the senior national teams of African countries. Tunisia is the reigning champion and Angola are the title leaders with 11. Kenya last made the AfroBasket tournament in 2021, which was their first time back since 1993.

    Ogechi played in all three games for a combined 69 minutes, scoring 33 points. From eight 2-pointers, five 3-pointers, and two free throws.

    Ogechi plays club basketball with Spanish team Cordoba CB, who play in the lower tiers of professional basketball in Spain. He has played 422 minutes for the team in his first year with them, scoring 230 points amid a positive season for both him and the team.

    Kenya returns to play on Feb. 21, 2025, facing hosts Tunisia once again. They will then play Angola on Feb. 22 and Guinea on Feb. 23.
