Nashville Launches Youth in Local Government Initiative

Program designed to give young people tools to make government work

Nashville's School Board and Metro Government are working together to launch a new program aimed at exposing high school students to the workings of local government.

The inaugural Youth in Local Government Day will be on April 2nd.

Metro Councilmember Zulfat Suara explained the importance of the initiative in a statement:

“The future of our city lies in the hands of our youth who experience and understand the challenges we face in Nashville,” explained Council Member At-Large Zulfat Suara. “They are already making a difference in their community. We are just providing our students with a stronger platform that amplifies their voices and teaches them how to interact with and to advocate within our local government.”

The program will offer 61 students from Antioch High School, McGavock High School, Pearl-Cohn High School, The Mayor’s Youth Council, and NCYC Ambassadors, the opportunity to experience local government in action. Students have been researching critical topics in their neighborhoods and will present them on April 2nd to members of the Metro Council.
