MONROE  — Authorities are suggesting residents who use well water in the area of the U.S. 23/U.S. 223 intersection in Whiteford Township test their drinking water as a precaution after a diesel fuel oil leak was reported in the area Thursday.

“A diesel oil sheen and smell was discovered from the point of origin and as far south as Hicker Road in the North Branch Ottawa River,” the Monroe County Health Department said in a report.

Crews are placing absorption booms in the NBOR near Erie and Sterns Road and using vacuum trucks near the origin of the leak to prevent the sheen and contaminated water getting into the river, while searching for the source of the leak, the report said.

There was no threat to municipal drinking water supplies at the time of the report, the document said.
