    Beloit College baseball team splits twinbill with host Ripon College

    RIPON, Wis. — Brett Kiger pounded his ninth home run of the spring and Connor Vogel blasted a grand slam as Beloit College defeated Ripon College 7-2 Thursday afternoon. The Buccaneers split a twinbill as they dropped the nightcap 10-4.

    Beloit (10-6, 3-2 Midwest Conference) will host Ripon (4-8, 1-1) on Saturday at noon at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.

    In the first game, Kiger was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, belting a solo homer in the fourth inning that tied the game at 1-1. The Red Hawks went back in front 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but from then on it was all Beloit. Connor Vogel’s RBI double in the sixth tied the game and an RBI groundout by Myles Souza put the Bucs in front to stay.

    Vogel’s grand slam came in the seventh with Kiger, Evan Zenger and Jack Alport on the bases and made it 7-2.

    In the opener, starter Aiden Phipps (4-1) won his fourth straight game, allowing six hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. Tommy Murray came on to pitch the final three innings and allow only one hit, no runs and three strikeouts.

    The Bucs were outhit 13-4 and committed four errors in the nightcap, leading only briefly. They took a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but Ripon answered with two runs in the second and never trailed again.

    The Red Hawks took a 5-2 lead into the eighth when the Bucs scored twice to come within 5-4. Ripon tacked on five runs in the bottom of the eighth to push the game out of reach.

    Caleb Lasher started for the Bucs and went just one innings, hitting a pair of batters and allowing a hit and a run. Eamon Burke (2-2) came on in the second and took the loss. He was touched for seven hits and four runs (three earned) in four innings. Micah Wilk worked two scoreless innings before Joshua Stern allowed four hits and five runs (four earned) in one inning of work.

    Ripon used five pitchers with starter Blaine Whalen (2-2) allowing just three hits and two runs over seven innings. He struck out six.

    Matt O’Leary was the lone Buc with more than one hit. He was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Zenger did drive in two runs. Alex Pankratz and Nick Tenny led Ripon. Pankratz was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Tenny was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
