Raiders drop third straight game at Jack Sink Baseball Classic

CHARLOTTE — A mid-season slide continued for the Richmond Senior High School baseball team Monday.

The Raiders lost 20-10 to Charlotte Christian School in five innings in their third of four games in the Jack Sink Baseball Classic.

In a game highlighted by high-scoring innings, Charlotte Christian scored 13 runs in bottom of the third and Richmond plated eight runs in the top of the fifth.

Dropping their third straight game over spring break, the Raiders also scored two runs in the top of the second frame.

Richmond knocked six hits, including a homer by sophomore Caden Nolan and a double apiece from junior Jabari Douglas and freshman Collin Hill. Adding singles were juniors Landon Taylor, Jeremiah Ritter and Riley Brown.

A four-pitcher effort was used by the Raiders in the loss, starting with junior Jason Walker (two innings, six runs, five hits).

Nolan and Taylor each allowed five runs on two hits in one-third of an inning. Junior Conner Phifer tossed the final one and one-third innings, giving up four runs on four hits.

The Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Nolan plated the first run with a solo shot to center field, his first career varsity longball. Douglas drove in a run with an RBI double to left.

After the Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the second, they added 13 runs in the home half of the third to jump ahead 16-2. The big inning featured two homers and two doubles for Charlotte Christian.

Trailing 20-2 after four innings, the Raiders scored their final eight runs in the top of the fifth. Phifer drew a bases-loaded walk and Nolan scored on a double play.

Hill recorded an RBI double, Ritter drove in a run on a single and Taylor scored on an error. Two more free passes with the bases loaded, coupled with a dropped third strike, accounted for the Raiders’ final three runs.

To close out the Jack Sink Baseball Classic, Richmond (8-5) is set to play Caldwell Academy (4-7) Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at East Mecklenburg High School.
