Sparks Fly As Nassau County Police Booth Catches Fire From Downed Power Lines, Fallen Tree

BAYVILLE, N.Y. - Strong wind gusts toppled a tree, knocking down power lines and sparking a fire that spread to a nearby Nassau County Police booth late Wednesday night on Bayville Avenue.

First responders were called to the intersection of Bayville Avenue and Ludlam Avenue at 11:53PM on Wednesday during the height of the storm after heavy wind gusts toppled a tree, scattering power lines.

While entangled in the tree and on the nearby Nassau County Police booth, the live power lines caught fire and rapidly began spreading. Video captured the moment an explosion sent sparks flying.

Firefighters from the Bayville Fire Company arrived on scene only moments after numerous 911 calls reported the incident, but first responders were unable to battle the small blaze that ignited the tree and police booth due to the power lines still being active.

A nearby PSEG Long Island crew was able to shut off the power to the wires and firefighters quickly extinguished all flames burning within the booth. The police booth, a place where police officers can take a meal break and complete paperwork, was heavily damaged as a result.

First responders across Nassau County responded to dozens of weather-related incidents throughout Wednesday evening and into early Thursday morning as relentless strong wind gusts continued to pummel the north and south shores.
