Despite these peaceful-looking waters, the lake has unfortunately claimed dozens of lives over the past few decades.

Between 1980 and 2022, Blue Marsh Lake has reported nearly 20 drowning deaths; 2 of which happened just last summer. According to polls taken in the area, many residents and visitors alike are still highly unaware of the safety precautions that must be taken when swimming here.Photo byRoss Gladstone/Unsplash

Officials strongly encourage all swimmers and boaters to wear a life jacket while in the water, ideally one that is approved by the Coast Guard. In the wake of these tragedies, park rangers warn visitors that swimming in a lake is much different than swimming in a pool. It's important to keep in mind that winds and over extending yourself too much can result in drowning. The importance of taking caution while in the water cannot be overstated. While this lake is an amazing place to fish, boat, and swim a sudden mistake can claim the lives of even the strongest swimmers. It is highly recommended that if you are visiting the lake, to wear a life vest.
