Doja Cat ’s latest project is a continuation of her last, arachnid-inspired album - and we are living for it! 2023’s Scarlet was intended to be more rap-focused than her last two LPs, including the pop-centric multi-GRAMMY nominated album, Planet Her . With the chart #1 single “Paint The Town Red,” Scarlet awarded the artist her first solo number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and placed her back in the ring as a force in Pop, R&B and Rap all at the same time.

Now, the existence of Scarlet 2 CLAUDE has been officially released as a deluxe version of the LP with brand-new material in tow. It's first single, "Masc" was teased on the artists' social media with both a hair-inspired cover art and a music video trailer on Instagram . "Masc" is one of seven new songs, a new collaboration with Teezo Touchdown . In addition to Teezo, Scarlet 2 also features a new collaboration with A$AP Rocky on song "Urrrge!!" Other new material includes 90's R&B inspired "Acknowledge Me,” the confident and smooth beats within “Disrespectful” and "HeadHigh," and more Pop Rap songs like “OkLoser” and “Piss.”

If you're keeping track, that puts the deluxe album at a total of 24 songs, 7 new and 17 from the original LP. With all this buzz, the deluxe album is virtually guaranteed to pull amazing numbers on its own - so why name it after someone called Claude Frollo?

Claude Frollo is a character from the 1996 Disney animation film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame . Driven by themes of religion, obsessive control, and lust, Frollo is considered one of the most complicated and sinister Disney villains ever created. In a recent guest feature on The Therapy Gecko Podcast , Doja explained her thinking behind the reference: “Because he is like a… is he a tyrant? I just… I feel like it connects to the story of Scarlet in some way. And if you look up his personality traits and who he is and his story, you’ll understand kind of the whole connection. There’s a control aspect.”

Doja went on to explain that, in the movie, Frollo has an intense obsession with a Romani street performer named Esmeralda. “All Esmeralda wanted to do was just be creative and sing and dance,” Doja explained as if aligning herself with the character. And the two are quite comparable at first glance - both personalities combine their creativity and revolutionary spirits to make shock-worthy art. Yet, Frollo’s obsession with Esmeralda teeters the line between extreme adoration and wanting to destroy her, an idea that Doja hopes to reflect in her music.

“Claude Frollo doesn’t depict a single person in my life,” she clarified in the podcast. “It’s like a metaphor for the people that creatives endure on a daily basis in a bigger picture, a bigger scale.”

The full Scarlett 2 ClLAUDE album is now available everywhere. Hear it in the mix by listening to our free Doja Cat Radio on the Audacy app.
