Pittsburg Hosts Community Meetings to Establish Renewed Vision for Old Town and Marina
2024-04-05
The City of Pittsburg is seeking to enhance the vitality and enhance connections between the popular destination of Old Town Pittsburg and the City’s large marina.
PITTSBURG, CA – The City of Pittsburg is continuing efforts and investments into its historic core, with an eye on connecting two adjacent, but often bifurcated, Old Town and waterfront destinations that have historically served as the economic and social hubs of the City – and officials are looking to residents and businesses to help lead this charge.
While early in the process, City staff has recently held workshops to receive public input. The first design charette, held last month at the City’s Marina Community Center, located adjacent to both Old Town and the Marina, was attended by nearly 80 local stakeholders who reviewed and commented on several possible concepts and amenities that could be added to the area.
A second meeting was held on April 4, with several dozen more locals gathering at E.J. Phair Brewing to provide insight into the needs of the area.
A key goal of the project is to identify ways to better connect the Marina to Old Town.
“While these two areas sit next to one another, the physical and mental barriers created by the termination of Railroad Avenue and a large parking lot make the pedestrian transition nearly impossible,” says John Funderburg, the City’s Assistant Director of Community and Economic Development.
“With the significant investments made in Old Town over past two decades, and the grant-funded projects that will enhance the Marina, it’s important we look for ways to encourage more people to visit these areas,” Funderburg added.
Staff notes that this process is focused on establishing a vision and plan to enhance the City’s core, with implementation that will occur over a longer period as redevelopment continues. The architecture firm Hunt Hale and Jones has been hired to assist with the project.
Senior Planner Maurice Brenyah-Addow, who is heading up the project adds, “A properly linked Old Town Pittsburg and Marina is a hidden gem that has great potential to become a regional tourist and recreational destination for both the Pittsburg community and beyond. I believe the envisioned community-driven concepts will be the key that translates this potential into a reality.”
