Governor Abbott Called Mayor Adams's Remark Nothing But a Gimmick

Texas Governor Greg Abbott was in New York City for a Republican fundraiser. During his visit, New York City Mayor Eric Adams gave an open invitation for the governor to sleep in one of the migrant shelters.

The two political leaders have not seen eye to eye as Governor Abbott sent the first busload of migrants to the Big Apple in the summer of 2022. Since then, the number of migrants Abbott sent along with migrants other cities have sent, and migrants arriving on their own has caused New York City to get overwhelmed.

This has led New York’s budget for migrant support to increase as they pay $1.45 billion in 2024 and then about $9.1 billion in 2025 and 2026 according to Bloomberg.

Governor Abbott has sent about 40,600 migrants to New York City according to his post on X.

Mayor Adams said on Thursday according to CBS News:

"I'm going to offer him a stay in one of the [Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers], so he can see what he has created and understand how we are treating people with the dignity and respect that he should have shown."

Governor Abbott said in an interview on Fox News’s “Hannity” according to The Hill:

“The invitation is nothing more than a gimmick.”

Governor Abbott continues to blame President Biden for the migrant crisis and said according to CBS News:

“When we began the bussing operation, it was going to one location. It was there on purpose because, remember, up to this time, neither Joe Biden nor the border czar had actually been to the border to see the chaos they had caused.”

"We were sending them only to Washington, D.C., and quite literally out of nowhere, Mayor Adams starts criticizing me for sending them to New York City."

"So after a while, I figured, gosh, if I'm gonna get the criticism, I'm gonna get the credit."

Mayor Adams criticized Governor Abbott for sending migrants to New York City before he began bussing them to the city.
