As to be expected, J. Cole has fired back at Kendrick Lamar in response to his verse on the Future and Metro Boomin’ track, “Like That.”

And while the lyrical retaliation isn’t in the least bit surprising, J. Cole dropping it as part of an unannounced mixtape, Might Delete Later, was completely unexpected, but obviously very welcomed.

On the project’s closing track, “7 Minute Drill,” Cole references Kendrick ’s recent disses at both him and Drake . Returning shots with some scathing bars of his own, starting off by running through the caliber and quality of his friend-turned-foe’s catalog.

“I got a phone call, they say that somebody dissing / You want some attention, it come with extensions,” he raps. “He still doing shows but fell off like ‘The Simpsons’ / Your first s*** was classic, your last s*** was tragic / Your second shit put n****s to sleep, but they gassed it / Your third shit was massive and that was your prime/ I was trailin’ right behind and I just now hit mine.”

He continues, “Now I’m front of the line with a comfortable lead / How ironic, soon as I got it, now he want somethin’ with me / Well, he caught me at the perfect time, jump up and see.”

The North Carolina-native carries on referencing Lamar’s five-part “The Heart” series that he’s rolled out in pieces throughout his career. “He averaging one ‘Heart’ verse like every 30 months or something / If he wasn’t dissing, then we wouldn’t be discussing nothin’ / Blood don’t make me have to smoke this n***a ’cause I f*** with him / But push come to shove on this mic I will humble him.”

He then likens his sparring match with Kendrick, with a reference to the New Jack City scene in which Wesley Snipes ’ character Nino Brown tearfully kills his brother. “I’m Nino with this thing, this that ‘New Jack City’ meme / Yeah, I’m aimin’ at Gee Money, cryin’ tears before I bust at him.”

Word playing on his mixed emotions to respond to his “brother” Kendrick’s claims and aims, Cole continued, “My text flooded with the hunger for a toxic reply / I’m hesitant, I love my brother, but I’m not gonna lie / I’m powered up for real, that s*** would feel like swattin’ a fly.”

Cole ends the fiery song with a warning to anyone who feels the need to add their two cents , while teasing his upcoming album The Fall Off .

“This is merely a warning shot to back n****s down / Back in the town where they whippin’ work and traffickin’ pounds / My jack jumpin’ ’bout a rapper makin’ blasphemous sounds / Switchin’ sides like the tassel on the cap and the gown / I’m fully loaded, n****, I can drop two classics right now,” he spits, before adding: “Let me chill out, man… The Fall Off on the way, n****.”
