Press coverage is among the primary reasons hundreds of millions know about climate change, its threats, and the need for solutions. However, the press is also an outlet for climate deniers. What happens if the press begins to focus its attention elsewhere and climate is pushed off the front pages? It is hard to quantify.

These media view themselves as primary sources of information about what they consider among the most critical topics in the world. Recently, the news company Aljazeera expressed anxiety: “There are fears that wars in Gaza and Ukraine may deflect attention from the climate crisis.”

During a news cycle like the one that exists today, climate may be pushed off the front pages more often than not. The Middle East tension creates the possibility of a wider war. This could disrupt the world’s oil supply and start a new round of inflation. Tens of millions of Americans’ cost of living could rise quickly. The Russian invasion of Ukraine could tip the balance of power between Russia and NATO. There are similar problems with China and many nations, particularly Taiwan.

Presidential Election And Climate Coverage

The Presidential election cycle will dominate the news many days between now and November. The coverage will increase as the rhetoric becomes more heated and perhaps violent. The Trump legal issues are part of this cycle as well.

What is essential is often left to the news media. Climate will not always be at the top of the list.
