Apple, the tech giant known for its iPhones and Mac computers, has announced that it will be laying off more than 600 employees in California. According to ABC7 , The layoffs will affect workers at eight different locations in Santa Clara County. This round of layoffs, affecting 614 total individuals, will not impact the company's main campus in Cupertino.

The company filed a notice with the state of California on March 28, and the layoffs will take effect on May 27. The affected job titles include machine shop managers, hardware engineers, and product design engineers .

While the company did not specify which projects the employees were working on, reports suggest that many of the affected employees were part of Apple's electric car project and its smartwatch display project. Both of these projects were shut down in February.

This marks the first major round of job cuts for Apple since the pandemic began and they had a "massive hiring surge." The company has been a notable exception as other tech companies have slashed their workforces over the past two years. Apple now has to focus on cutting costs as growth slows, affecting a small portion of their "161,000 full-time equivalent employees."

Apple has not yet responded to requests for comment on the layoffs.
