    High school roundup: Greene Central completes sweep, still perfect

    The Greene Central baseball team completed a home-and-home sweep of Ayden-Grifton on Thursday in a five-inning, 11-0 shutout and remained undefeated this season.

    GC leadoff man Noah Uzzell led the charge, going 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, while Braden Burress was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Easton Creech was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Riley Radford and Will Radford traded RBI doubles.

    Burress struck out four and yielded one hit in five innings.

    The Rams (13-0, 6-0) host Washington on Tuesday, while the Chargers (9-5, 2-4) travel to North Pitt.

    Farmville Central 5, Washington 1

    The Jags also got a home-and-home sweep, outscoring the Pam Pack by a count of 9-1 in the two games.

    FC (9-4, 5-1) broke open a close game on Thursday with four runs over the last two innings.

    Trey Williford struck out 10 over five innings to net the pitching win, while Emerson Howell drove in two runs and Williford and Brett Cash added one RBI apiece in the win.

    Farmville travels to West Craven on Tuesday.

    T.C. Roberson 7, J.H. Rose 1

    The Rampants surrendered their first loss of the season on Saturday at home after the Rams broke a 1-1 tie with a six-run sixth inning.

    Rose (14-1) managed just four hits and made two errors in the loss.

    Two of those hits came from Jay Tyndall, while Parker Watson added a double and Ethan Simmons drove in the lone run.

    J.H. Rose plays at Havelock on Tuesday.

    SouthWest Edgecombe 11, North Pitt 1

    The Panthers lost a pair of games to the Cougars last week, including Thursday night’s 11-1 decision despite the game being tied 1-1 after one.

    Kolby Burroughs drove in the lone run for NP (3-8, 0-4), which faces a pair of games against Ayden-Grifton this week, beginning at home on Tuesday.

    SOFTBALL

    D.H. Conley 4, Wake Forest 2

    Conley scored three in the first inning and made it stick on Friday.

    Kendall Howard pitched six innings for Conley, allowing three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. At the plate, Taylor Getsinger had a triple and three RBIs, while Lena Zurface went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Olivia Hadnott added a triple.

    Conley (8-3, 3-1) hosts South Central on Tuesday.

    Ayden-Grifton 21, Greene Central 1

    The Chargers won their fifth straight game on Thursday with their second convincing win of the week against the Rams.

    A-G (6-5, 3-3) outscored GC (0-12, 0-6) by a total of 45-7 in the two games.

    Ayden-Grifton plays at North Pitt on Tuesday and Greene Central hosts Washington.

    Washington 5, Farmville Central 0

    The Jags and Pam Pack traded shutouts last week, the second one going the way of Washington.

    Washington’s Emma Orr was dealing, striking out 13 and limiting the Jags to just four hits. Aidyn McLawhorn had two of those but the Jags settled for all singles.

    FC plays at West Craven on Tuesday.

    John Paul II 20, North Carolina East Prep 3

    The Saints split a pair of games on Thursday night in tournament action in Tarboro, including a three-inning rout of NC East Prep.

    In that contest, JPII scored 13 runs in the first inning and seven over the next two frames.

    The Saints lost to Ashe County, 11-3, in Thursday’s other game. John Paul II hosts Grace Christian on Tuesday.

    GOLF

    Conley teams in top 5

    Conley competed in a non-conference match on Friday at Greenville Country Club, with the Vikings Navy team placing third and the Gold team placing fifth.

    The Vikings were led by senior Coleton DuRant, who shot a 4-over 75, while Cooper Williamson shot a career tournament low with a 77.

    The Vikings will be back in action in a Big Carolina Conference match on Monday at Jacksonville Country Club.
