Biden to attend rally with care workers Tuesday

President Biden will speak Tuesday at a rally highlighting investments in the care economy, a source familiar with the plans exclusively told The Hill.

Biden will attend an event hosted by Care Can’t Wait Action, a coalition of groups focused on expanding access to child care, paid family and medical leave and home-based services. Representatives from the AFL-CIO, AARP and National Domestic Workers Alliance will also be in attendance, the source said.

The president is expected to speak about how his agenda has bolstered investments in care workers, specifically through legislation like the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act.

Biden will contrast those investments with a budget proposal from House Republicans that could cut investments in caregiving programs, the source familiar said. Biden’s most recent budget proposal called for investments to guarantee access to childcare for families making less than $200,000 a year.

Tuesday’s rally coincides with April being Care Workers Recognition Month. Biden issued a proclamation in late March denoting the month and calling care workers “our Nation’s hidden heroes.”

“They support so many of our families across the country, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are not left behind,” Biden wrote in the proclamation.

The event comes roughly a year after Biden signed an executive order to boost compensation for care workers, support family caregivers, and expand affordable care options through 50 directives to federal agencies. Officials have previously noted there is significant attrition among care workers because of low pay.
