MARINETTE — Ethan Doubek pitched a web gem for the Marinette baseball team on Monday, as the Marines blanked Peshtigo 10-0 in non-conference action from Dale Minzlaff Field at Pedersen Ball Park.

The win was Marinette’s first of the season after the Marines opened the 2024 campaign with three consecutive losses against Green Bay Southwest and Freedom.

Monday’s game saw Doubek spin five innings of one-hit ball and carry a no-hitter deep into the fifth before Dyllan Young managed to leg out an infield single for Peshtigo’s lone base knock of the afternoon.

“Ethan threw strikes and kept us in the game,” Marinette coach Mike Maedke said. “I feel bad for the kid because he’s a competitor, and he wanted that (no-hitter) more than he let on.”

Despite losing his no-hitter, Doubek appeared in midseason form just four games into the year after racking up 11 strikeouts against just two walks while retiring the first 10 batters he faced, in order.

In fact, the Bulldogs (0-1) did not reach base until the top of the fourth.

Getting on base was no problem for the Marines (0-2 North Eastern Conference, 1-3 overall), as Marinette smacked eight base hits, took five walks and had one hitter, Weston Hanson, reach first after getting hit by pitch.

Marinette also stole three bases, with Chase MacGregor swiping two of them.

“One of our focuses this year is putting more pressure on teams. We can’t just sit back, we need to go out and make things happen,” Maedke said. “I love our aggressiveness. I want guys to take chances on the base paths and I want guys in action, and I think that we have the team that can handle that.”

Clutch hitting aided Marinette’s cause in the early innings, as the Marines strung together four consecutive two-out hits, with the fourth a two-run single from Wyatt Stauss.

Cooper Smith scored on a wild pitch as Marinette seized a 3-0 lead at the bottom of the first before MacGregor socked a two-out RBI-single to plate Levi Hanson and make it a 4-0 game at the bottom of the second.

“It was nice to see that when our first two guys went down in the first inning, we scored three runs, and then were able to score another run in the second inning with two outs,” Maedke said. “That’s the makings of a good ball club. Some of those at-bats weren’t pretty, but when you put the ball in play, good things can happen.”

Marinette continued to pile on in the bottom of the third, with Braeden Huston driving in two runs, Levi Hanson adding an RBI-single and Weston Hanson scoring on an error to push the Marines on top 8-0.

Nik Williams scored on a balk to make it a 9-0 affair in the bottom of the fourth before Stauss tacked on an RBI-groundout to score Smith and give Marinette a 10-run cushion.
