    High school journalists attend national convention, come home with 2 awards

    Albert Lea High School journalism students attended the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention from April 4-6 in Kansas City and returned with new awards.

    The convention began with the keynote speaker, Jim Richardson, who is a photojournalist from National Geographic.

    Twenty students from the Ahlahasa newspaper, Tiger Yearbook, Tiger Vision broadcast TV and Imag literary magazine spent two days attending instructional sessions, visiting the trade show and eating barbecue. They participated in onsite critiques to get feedback and suggestions as they plan for next year’s publications.

    In the closing ceremony, Albert Lea went home with two awards in the Best in Show competition.

    Junior Rosa Corey-Gruenes won ninth place for editorial leadership as the editor-in-chief of print for the Ahlahasa newspaper and the Imag literary magazine. Corey-Guenes, along with junior Piper Aanes and sophomore Kae Bee, won first place in Magazine Design for the Imag.

    Second through 10th place received a certificate. First place received a plaque.
