The Turnage Theatre was filled last week with the sounds of aspiring young artists. Forty students grades 3-10, explored a variety of arts from pottery to pantomime under the guidance of professional artists and teachers. Following a week of creating and preparing, the students showcased their artwork and performed before a gathering of family and friends. It was all part of the Beaufort County Arts Council’s 2024 Spring Break Art Camp. “Youth arts programs provide a place for children to connect with peers from across the county, and empower them to be creative and collaborative,” said executive director of the Arts Council, Kelly Shanafelt.

“Not only do these classes build a knowledge of the artistic process, they also provide understanding in time management, teamwork, communication, written and verbal interpretation, and so many more skills that benefit students in all areas of their life,” added Arts Council program director Ethan Wolf.

Shanafelt said free programs such as this would not be possible without the support they have received from the residents of Beaufort County. “While we can offer scholarships and have done so, we know from research that offering these programs free to all youth removes the stigma felt by lower-income families who must ask for these scholarships. It levels the playing field for every young person who wants to participate. Many incredibly generous community members have come forward to help support this project, and other free camps coming up this summer.”
