The right-hander knew he had to keep the Tigers at bay.Mission accomplished.Canale threw five scoreless innings of relief, and the Bulldogs used a four-run sixth to rally for a 5-3 victory in the opening round of the District 6-5A tournament at Slidell on April 9.“Austin (Canale) did a great job for us,” Fontainebleau first-year coach Rickey Noland said. “He is always ready to come in when we need him, and he was outstanding tonight. Our starter Jackson Wall didn’t have his best stuff, so it’s always nice to have a great arm to fall back on.”Canale got the win, allowing just three hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out two.“I’m always ready when coach needs me,” Canale said. “When I went to the mound, I looked around at my teammates and said to myself that I was going to win this game for them.”The Tigers (18-9) took an early lead as Corey Cousin reached on an error in the first inning, stole second and scored on Junior Burdett’s RBI single.Slidell tacked on two runs in the second inning. Troy Green singled, and courtesy runner Grant Bonnaffons later stole home to score the first run. Brady Johnson drove in Cousin with an RBI single to make it 3-0.The Bulldogs got a run back in the third with a two-out rally. Jackson Wall was hit by a pitch and scored on Evan Wright’s RBI single, but Fontainebleau turned the game around in the sixth.Wright opened the sixth with a single. Canale belted a one-out double to put two on with one out. After a walk loaded the bases, Beau Buras was hit by a pitch to cut the lead in half with two outs. Canale tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch, and the Bulldogs plated their final two runs on an error to set the final score.The Tigers tried to rally in the seventh, but Wright threw out a pair of runners to kill any momentum.Slidell's Troy Green took the loss. In six innings, he allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks and struck out four.The Bulldogs (13-14) will host Northshore (10-17) in the tournament semifinals.— Dave WoodallNORTHSHORE 4, COVINGTON 2: The seventh-seeded Panthers scored four runs in the seventh to pull off a first-round upset over the Lions (20-8).Panthers senior Grant Simmons was masterful on the mound. He struck out 14, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with one walk in seven innings.Simmons started the seventh-inning rally with a walk to open the inning. Courtesy runner Derek Weilbaecher scored on an error after Ayden Strecker's single to cut the advantage to 2-1. Carson Malasovich followed with a two-run double to give Northshore the lead. Brody Dukes added an RBI single to set the final score.Covington starter Aiden Ryan pitched well and earned a no decision, allowing one run on six hits and three walks in 6.1 innings. He struck out seven. Offensively, Keith Aymami went 2 for 3, while Jackson Sharp drove in a run.MANDEVILLE 3, HAMMOND 2: The top-seeded Skippers (22-6) trailed for much of the game, but Tyler Fischer's two-run single in the fifth was the difference as the home team survived an upset bid. Mandeville will host fourth-seeded St. Paul's (15-11) in the semifinals.Eighth-seeded Hammond took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Kaleb O'Hara's solo home run. Mandeville answered in the third when Mason Hickman scored on an error. The Tors (6-18) regained the lead in the fourth, as Nick Bartee scored on Josh Triolo's RBI groundout, but Fischer's heroics in the fifth erased that advantage.Ashton Calegan got the win in relief. He threw three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.ST. PAUL'S 3, PONCHATOULA 1: The fourth-seeded Wolves scored two runs in the sixth inning to defeat the sixth-seeded Green Wave.Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Cooper Winchester's sac fly doubled the lead. Sammy St. Pierce added an RBI single to make it 3-1. Ponchatoula (14-10) tried to rally in the seventh, but John Montour induced a strikeout with the tying run on second to end the game and secure the save.Easton LeBlanc got the win, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
