Every year, the thinking is that the Pike County Cattlemen’s Equipment Auction can’t get any bigger or better.

    Well, think again!

Pike County Cattleman Johnny Garrett said the 2024 Pike County Cattlemen Equipment Auction on Saturday, was bigger and better by far than ever before.

“Around four hundred and eighty thousand dollars,” Garrett said. ‘That’s almost a half million. But, we had some big items that brought big money. We had an 18-wheeler truck and trailer that brought about $10,00. There were a lot of items related to the cattle industry that sold high including chutes, guards, crates, hay rings. Just a variety of items that people were willing to pay big dollars for.”

Whether those items on the auction block are an indication of a decline in the local cattle industry, Garrett said he couldn’t say. “But there were a lot of those items and more than we’ve had.”

Seemingly, most of the sellers and buyers went home happy, Garrett said.

A few sellers didn’t get what they wanted for their items so they bought them back.

Garrett said that happens at most all auctions.

“This was by far, the best cattlemen ‘s auction that the Pike County Cattlemen have ever had,” Garrett said. “We had a lot of stuff and a lot of stuff went out the gate.”

Most of the money that was raised by the Pike County Cattlemen’s is earmarked, primarily, for the upkeep of Cattleman Park and for the Cattlemen’s scholar program and for youth programs.

Garrett expressed appreciation to all those who sold items, those who bought items, those who donated, the auctioneers and those worked diligent to get ready for the auction and to close it down.
