Softball: Fast start carries Jefferson past Lakeside Lutheran 9-1

LAKE MILLS — Bre Mengel pitched six effective innings and Aeryn Messmann drove in three runs as Jefferson beat host Lakeside Lutheran 9-1 in nonconference softball on Saturday.

Mengel and Ashlyn Enke had consecutive RBI singles in the first before a ground out by Messmann made it 3-0. With two away in the Jefferson second, Mengel singled home a run, two more runs came across on an error in right field before Messmann made it 7-0 with a run-scoring double to left.

Mengel allowed a run on five hits and struck out three to earn the decision before Hildie Dempsey pitched a scoreless seventh for the Eagles (5-1).

Kieghtan Rank, who allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits in two frames, took the loss for the Warriors (1-3).

“Jefferson is a very good team in all phases and well-coached,” Lakeside softball coach Matt Doering said. “Credit goes to them.

“We played well in stretches, but we need to improve in consistency. We are growing and learning.”

On Monday, Lakeside hosts Cambridge and Jefferson hosts Mayville.
