Former 'The Golden Bachelor' contestant weighs in on Gerry Turner's divorce news: 'I dodged a bullet'

After "The Golden Bachelor" Gerry Turner and show winner Theresa Nist announced their divorce following three months of marriage, one of the show's former contestant breathed a sigh of relief.

Speaking with PEOPLE , Maria Trice, who was sent home during the reality show's first week, remarked how when you're "trying to force a shoe that doesn't first, you're going to get corns on your toes."

"I think I dodged a bullet," she told the publication. "…The interesting part about being at this stage and this age is people have stuff, even if they do their due diligence of finding out as much as they can about everyone, I think other stuff just comes up. Men in particular."

Trice also said Nist is "the sweetest" and how she needs to focus on herself right now.

"I've had a lot of love in my life, real love. She can do it again, and she can do it better. The biggest love you can have is loving yourself and that attracts all sorts of things," she said.

During an April 12 "Good Morning America" appearance Turner and Nist announced they would be divorcing.
