Babcock High School volunteers helped clean up a Lee County beach.

The Great American Cleanup didn’t disappoint in Southwest Florida when more than 400 volunteers pitched in to throw out trash.

On March 30, Keep Lee County Beautiful (KLCB) hosted the event at 14 different locations across Southwest Florida.

Volunteers cleaned up parks, beaches, roadsides and waterways. They picked up nearly 7,000 pounds of litter and debris.

Since launching the Great American Cleanup in 1988, Keep America Beautiful estimates that 500,000 volunteers have taken part in 15,000 community events nationwide through local affiliates and partner organizations.

“We believe that people and places are profoundly interconnected,” said Keep Lee County Beautiful Executive Director Trish Fancher. “The Great American Cleanup is a shining example of how lasting, positive change happens when people work together.”

The mission of Keep Lee County Beautiful is to inspire, educate and engage the Lee County community in improving, beautifying and protecting our environment. KLCB plans volunteer events and education programs that help to clean, enhance, and protect shorelines, beaches and waterways; remove litter and debris from roadways and public spaces; and reduce waste and improve recycling.
