British envoy: Israel is ‘making a decision to act’ as Iran vows to respond to any incursion

JERUSALEM (AP) — British Foreign Secretary David Cameron says Israel “is making a decision to act” in response to Iran’s missile and drone attack over the weekend. Iran’s president meanwhile warned that even the “tiniest” invasion of its territory would bring a “massive and harsh” response. He addressed an annual army parade which had been relocated from its usual route and was not carried live on state TV — possibly because of fears it could be targeted. Israel has vowed to respond to Iran’s unprecedented attack without saying when or how. Cameron and Germany’s foreign minister were in Israel on separate visits Wednesday. The two countries have urged restraint.

Facing a GOP revolt, House Speaker Johnson’s plan for US aid to Ukraine, allies uncertain

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson has pushed back against mounting Republican anger over his proposed U.S. aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other allies. He also rejected a call on Tuesday to step aside or risk a vote to oust him from office. Johnson said he is “not resigning,” after a testy morning meeting of House Republicans at the Capitol. The embattled Republican speaker pressed ahead for voting this week on the U.S. national security aid package, a situation that would force him to rely on Democrats to help pass it. But as night fell, Johnson’s resolve collided with GOP opposition, and he was meeting late into the night with lawmakers on other options.

First 7 jurors are chosen for Trump’s hush money criminal trial, with 11 more still needed

NEW YORK (AP) — The first seven jurors for Donald Trump’s New York hush money trial have been chosen after lawyers grilled members of the jury pool about their social media posts, political views and personal lives. The questioning Tuesday was designed to help decide whether they can sit in fair judgment of the Republican former president. The panelists selected are an information technology worker, an English teacher, an oncology nurse, a sales professional, a software engineer and two lawyers. Eleven more still need to be picked before opening statements begin as early as next week. The case accuses Trump of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal during his 2016 campaign. Trump denies wrongdoing.

Russian missiles slam into a Ukraine city and kill 14 people as the war approaches a critical stage

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Local officials say three Russian missiles have slammed into a downtown area of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, hitting an eight-floor apartment building and killing at least 14 people. Emergency services said at least 61 people, including two children, were wounded in the Wednesday morning attack. Chernihiv is located about 150 kilometers or 90 miles north of the capital Kyiv near the border with Russia and Belarus. The city has a population of around 250,000 people. The latest Russian bombardment came as the war stretched into its third year and approached what could be a critical juncture as a lack of further military support from Ukraine’s Western partners increasingly leaves it at the mercy of the bigger Kremlin forces.

Tesla wants shareholders to reinstate $56 billion pay package for Musk rejected by Delaware judge

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Tesla will ask shareholders to reinstate the compensation package for CEO Elon Musk that was rejected by a judge in Delaware this year and to move the electric carmaker’s corporate home from Delaware to Texas. In January, Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick ruled that Musk is not entitled to a landmark compensation package awarded by Tesla’s board of directors that is potentially worth more than $56 billion. Musk said a month later that he would try to move Tesla’s corporate listing to Texas, where he has already moved company headquarters. In a document filed with federal regulators Wednesday, the company said it was putting that move up to a vote.

Senate will convene the Mayorkas impeachment trial as Democrats plot a quick dismissal

WASHINGTON (AP) — Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says as Republicans work on his impeachment, he’s working on “advancing the mission of the Department of Homeland Security.” Mayorkas tells CBS’ “CBS Mornings” show that’s what he’s done throughout this impeachment process. Senate Democrats could end the Mayorkas impeachment trial before arguments even begin. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to call votes to dismiss two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas after senators are sworn in as jurors Wednesday. Such a move could scuttle the trial and frustrate Republicans who’ve demanded House prosecutors be able to make their case. The House narrowly voted in February to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in US more likely to believe in climate change: AP-NORC poll

Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the United States are slightly more likely than the overall adult population to believe in human-caused climate change. That’s according to a recent poll from AAPI Data and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. It finds that 84% of AAPI adults agree climate change exists. In comparison, 74% of all U.S. adults hold the same sentiment. Furthermore, three-quarters of AAPI adults who accept climate change is real attribute it to human activity. More AAPI Republicans than Republicans overall recognize climate change.

Columbia University’s president will testify in Congress on college conflicts over Israel-Hamas war

Four months after a contentious congressional hearing led to the resignations of two Ivy League presidents, Columbia University’s president is set to appear before the same committee over questions of antisemitism and the school’s response to escalating conflicts on campus. Nemat Shafik, Columbia’s president, was originally asked to testify at the House Education and Workforce Committee’s hearing in December, but she declined, citing scheduling conflicts. The December hearing instead featured the presidents of Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, whose lawyerly responses drew a fierce backlash. The presidents of Harvard and Penn have since resigned.

Bob Graham, ex-US senator and Florida governor, dies at 87

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Former Florida Sen. Bob Graham, who chaired the Intelligence Committee following the 2001 terrorist attacks and opposed the Iraq invasion, has died. He was 87. His family announced the death Tuesday in a statement posted on X by his daughter Gwen Graham. Graham served three terms in the Senate and two terms as Florida’s governor. He made an unsuccessful bid for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination, emphasizing his opposition to the Iraq invasion. But that bid was delayed by heart surgery in January 2003, and he was never able to gain enough traction with voters to catch up. He didn’t seek re-election in 2004 and was replaced by Republican Mel Martinez.

A storm dumps record rain across the desert nation of UAE and floods Dubai’s airport

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Heavy thunderstorms have lashed the United Arab Emirates, dumping the heaviest rain ever recorded in the country in the span of hours as it flooded out portions of major highways and Dubai’s international airport. By the end of Tuesday, more 5.59 inches of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 3.73 inches of rain at Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel and a hub for the long-haul carrier Emirates. The state-run WAM news agency called the rain “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.”
