AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- With impeachment proceedings set to get underway Wednesday in the U.S. Senate against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Sen. John Cornyn says Republicans will push back against efforts to quickly dismiss the charges.

Cornyn (R-Texas), speaking with Talk 1370's Cardle & Woolley Wednesday morning, said efforts by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-New York) to immediately table the charges would go against Senate rules.

"That may sound like a rather minor procedural move, but actually it violates the Constitutional responsibility of the Senate to hold a trial when the House votes [on] articles of impeachment, and it violates Senate rules," said Cornyn. "But just as we've become accustomed to the lawlessness of the Biden administration on the border and elsewhere... that continues here in the United States Senate today. But it won't go down without a fight, so stay tuned."

Cornyn said Schumer will need 51 votes to table the articles of impeachment.

"We will be urging a number of procedural points, a number of arguments... but this will be their way of trying to sweep it under the rug, just as they've tried to do the last three years," said Cornyn.

On the topic of accountability, Cornyn said it's an issue for both political parties - and he feels it's one of the reasons Donald Trump continues to see strong support. "He's a disruptor of the status quo, and people want things shaken up, and they want us to return to the values that have made our country so prosperous and so strong," said Cornyn. "They see nothing but an erosion of that in recent years... the great thing about a democracy is that we can course correct."

Asked about several instances of pro-Palestinian protestors shutting down roadways and bridges in several cities on Monday, Cornyn said we need to call it what it is. "It's anti-Semitism. It's intolerance of the diversity of our great nation... something that the left likes to claim that they own is a commitment to diversity, but it also means that people should respect one another but not use their views to basically inhibit or hurt others," said Cornyn.
