Opinion: Will a 4-Day Work/School Week Be the Norm

A four-day school week is more common than many realize, with almost 2,100 schools across 25 states. Some research suggests it improves student achievement. However, other studies have shown a negative impact on student learning.

Another elementary school in Indiana will move to a 4-day school day starting in August for the 2024 - 2025 school year.

With the recent talk of a 4-day work week, at least one-third of the working population in the US would benefit from the move. Hybrid is another option many corporations are using. For some, Hybrid is already part of their schedule.

Technology has enabled many corporations to automate and streamline their operations. But that also means having fewer workers. A four-day workweek would benefit some companies because they wouldn't have to pay their workers for that extra day.

However, what would having a four-day school day do? It would break tradition. The change could be a catalyst for changing how the government runs schools.

A four-day school day would probably work better at the high school than the elementary school. However, if all schools moved to a four-day school week, it would create other problems.

If it should become the norm, parents must find day care for elementary school students one day a week. Many schools still operate at least a seven-hour day for five days a week.

Final Thoughts

Each state will need to decide if having a four-day school week benefits its residents. If most schools change to a four-day school week, it is also a good idea to change to a four-day workweek.

Like it or not, many believe schools serve another important purpose besides educating students. They provide day care for many students while parents are at work.
