After 34 years working for Sherburne County — including the last 17 as auditor-treasurer — Diane Arnold has announced that she will retire effective July 9.

“It has been a pleasure to work for the citizens of Sherburne County, both as an employee of the county and as the elected auditor-treasurer. However, the time is right for me to step aside and spend more quality time with my family and friends,” Arnold said in a statement.

The Sherburne County Board of Commissioners accepted her retirement during the board meeting on April 16. County Administrator Bruce Messelt read a resolution acknowledging her “outstanding and meritorious service to Sherburne County” and the board declared July 9 as Diane Arnold Day before giving Arnold a standing ovation.

Several commissioners expressed their appreciation to Arnold.

“Thank you so much, Diane,” Commissioner Raeanne Danielowski said. “You have done so much for this county in your leadership role as our elected Sherburne County auditor-treasurer. You will be deeply missed, but you definitely have earned your retirement.”

Commissioner Lisa Fobbe told Arnold she’s grateful for all she has given to the county.

Commissioner Gary Gray said he’s known the Arnold family for decades. He told Arnold that her expertise, knowledge and leadership will be tremendously missed.

Board Chair Gregg Felber said in a statement on behalf of the County Board and all county staff that they congratulate Arnold on the culmination of an amazing career in service to Sherburne County and its residents.

“While we wish her all the best in retirement, Diane’s leadership, knowledge, and steady hand as auditor-treasurer will be sorely missed,” Felber said.

Arnold told the board on April 16 that there is an awesome staff in place.

“I feel very comfortable in leaving Sherburne County in great hands,” she said.

The County Board will select and appoint an auditor-treasurer to complete the balance of Arnold’s current elected term, which ends on Jan. 4, 2027.

According to the county’s website, the responsibilities of the Sherburne County Auditor/Treasurer Department are:

    • Manages the county’s investments and checking account.

    • Computes taxes for real and personal property.

    • Receives real estate tax payments.

    • Collects assessments and delinquent taxes.

    • Manages forfeiture of property for delinquent taxes.

    • Collects and distributes gravel tax production tax to appropriate entities.

    • Administers elections, and issues driver’s licenses, county liquor licenses and other miscellaneous licenses.
